Methane (CH₄)

Properties and Applications

Methane (CH₄), a type of Industrial Gas, is a colorless, odorless, and non-toxic organic compound with distinct physical characteristics. Under standard temperature and pressure (STP), methane exists as a gas with a density approximately 0.55 times that of air, making it lighter and minimally soluble in water. It transitions to liquid at -161.5°C (boiling point) and solidifies at -182.5°C (melting point), remaining gaseous under ambient conditions. Methane is commonly used as a fuel for heating, cooking, and power generation. Because it is an odorless hydrocarbon gas, it is often mixed with substances that have an odor to report leaks or spills in pipes and systems.

Specifications

YIGAS is a methane gas supplier providing 99.9%, 99.99% and 99.999% CH₄ for industrial processing, analytical laboratories, gas detector calibration, specialty gas blending, chemical research and selected semiconductor and electronic manufacturing applications. Our methane gas is supplied in high-pressure cylinders with CGA350 valves. Standard packaging includes 40L cylinders containing approximately 6 m³, 47L cylinders containing approximately 7 m³ and 50L cylinders containing approximately 10 m³.

For industrial distributors, laboratories, gas mixture companies and process manufacturers, selecting a methane supplier requires more than comparing the headline purity. Buyers should also review ethane, nitrogen, oxygen, water, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and other hydrocarbon limits according to the intended process.

YIGAS supports single-grade evaluation, multi-cylinder commercial orders, recurring delivery programs and customized methane calibration gas mixtures.

How to Select the Correct Methane Grade

Choose 99.9% Methane When:

  • The process is relatively tolerant of trace contaminants.

  • Methane is used in industrial development or pilot equipment.

  • The project involves combustion, catalyst or chemical reaction studies.

  • Cost is more important than ultra-low impurity levels.

  • The customer has defined acceptance limits compatible with the standard specification.

Choose 99.99% High-Purity Methane When:

  • Methane is used in analytical or laboratory equipment.

  • The gas will be used as a raw material for specialty gas blending.

  • Lower moisture, oxygen, nitrogen and ethane levels are required.

  • Repeatable gas composition is important.

  • A high-purity compressed gas is required but electronic-grade limits are unnecessary.

Choose 99.999% Electronic Grade Methane When:

  • The process is sensitive to oxygen, moisture and sulfur contamination.

  • Methane is used as a carbon-source gas in selected electronic processes.

  • The customer requires individual impurity control at low ppm levels.

  • The product must be reviewed under a semiconductor or electronic-material qualification process.

  • Batch consistency and analytical documentation are part of the purchase specification.

A 99.999% assay does not automatically confirm suitability for every semiconductor process. The customer should compare the full impurity table with the approved material standard.

How to Choose the Correct Methane Cylinder Size

Cylinder selection should be based on consumption rate and site operation rather than choosing the largest cylinder automatically.

40L Methane Cylinder

Suitable for:

  • Moderate laboratory consumption

  • Periodic equipment testing

  • Pilot-scale processes

  • Sites with limited cylinder space

  • Customers that prefer easier handling

47L Methane Cylinder

Suitable for:

  • Regular laboratory use

  • Specialty gas blending

  • Gas analyzer development

  • Recurring process demand

  • Standard multi-cylinder shipments

50L High-Pressure Methane Cylinder

Suitable for:

  • Higher gas consumption

  • Longer operating periods between cylinder changes

  • Commercial gas blending

  • Pilot production equipment

  • Applications where fewer cylinder changes are preferred

The customer should also consider whether a single-cylinder system, manual manifold or automatic changeover manifold is required.

Methane for Specialty Gas Blending

Methane is an important raw material for producing single-component and multi-component gas standards.

Typical customers include:

  • Calibration gas manufacturers

  • Regional industrial gas distributors

  • Environmental laboratories

  • Instrument companies

  • Natural gas laboratories

  • Gas detector manufacturers

  • Research institutions

  • Oil and gas service companies

  • Petrochemical testing laboratories

The suitability of a methane grade for blending depends on the concentration of the final mixture.

For example, trace impurities in the source methane may become insignificant in a low-concentration mixture, while they may remain important in high-percentage natural gas standards.

Before selecting the raw material, the mixture producer should consider:

  • Final methane concentration

  • Number of mixture components

  • Analytical uncertainty

  • Required traceability

  • Cylinder material

  • Internal cylinder treatment

  • Balance gas purity

  • Required shelf life

  • Customer acceptance criteria

  • Applicable calibration method
