Gas Application Scenarios

Nitrogen (N₂) → Inert protection and purging

Argon (Ar) → Wafer and soldering protection

Ammonia (NH₃), CF₄, NF₃ → Etching, cleaning, and semiconductor processes

High-Purity Nitrogen for Semiconductor Production

Nitrogen is one of the most widely used gases in semiconductor factories. It provides a clean and stable atmosphere and helps protect production equipment and materials from oxygen, moisture and other contaminants.

Typical applications include:

  • Process equipment purging

  • Gas pipeline purging

  • Load-lock and transfer chamber purging

  • Wafer storage atmosphere protection

  • Inerting of production equipment

  • Carrier and dilution gas

  • Chemical storage protection

  • Equipment maintenance and cleaning

  • General factory gas supply

Semiconductor facilities normally consume nitrogen continuously. Large users should therefore consider purity, flow rate, pressure, storage capacity, backup supply and delivery frequency together.

YIGAS can provide high-purity nitrogen in cylinders, liquid supply and other suitable delivery formats according to customer consumption and destination.

High-Purity Argon for Plasma and Sputtering Processes

Argon is an inert gas used where a stable and non-reactive process atmosphere is required.

In semiconductor and electronics production, argon may be used for:

  • Physical vapor deposition

  • Sputtering

  • Plasma processing

  • Reactive ion etching

  • Wafer surface treatment

  • Equipment purging

  • Inert atmosphere protection

  • Research and process development

Because argon does not react easily with process materials, it is commonly used to generate plasma and support controlled thin-film manufacturing.

YIGAS supplies high-purity and ultra-high-purity argon in gaseous and liquid formats. The appropriate grade and packaging depend on the required flow, purity and frequency of use.

Electronic Grade Ammonia for Film Deposition

Electronic-grade ammonia is used as a nitrogen-source gas in selected semiconductor, LED and compound semiconductor manufacturing processes.

Typical applications include:

  • Silicon nitride film deposition

  • Gallium nitride production

  • LED manufacturing

  • Compound semiconductor processing

  • CVD and related thin-film processes

  • Optoelectronic component manufacturing

For semiconductor applications, ammonia quality should be evaluated according to its complete impurity profile. Water, oxygen, carbon compounds and other trace impurities can affect sensitive production processes.

YIGAS offers high-purity and electronic-grade ammonia, including published grades up to 99.99994%. Available packaging includes 47L cylinders and larger containers for customers with recurring consumption.

Customers should provide their required purity, maximum impurity limits, cylinder size and valve connection before ordering.

CF₄ Gas for Semiconductor Etching

Tetrafluoromethane, also known as carbon tetrafluoride or CF₄, is a fluorinated electronic specialty gas used in plasma-based semiconductor processes.

Typical applications include:

  • Plasma etching

  • Silicon-containing material etching

  • Selected chamber-cleaning processes

  • Surface treatment

  • Semiconductor equipment testing

  • Electronics process development

When activated in plasma, CF₄ produces reactive fluorine-containing species that can remove or etch selected materials.

YIGAS supplies 99.999% electronic-grade CF₄ with controlled limits for moisture, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen fluoride and other impurities. The published standard packaging is a 47L cylinder with a CGA580 valve and a net filling weight of approximately 30 kg.

Process engineers should confirm that the CF₄ specification and cylinder connection are compatible with their equipment and approved manufacturing process.

NF₃ Gas for CVD Chamber Cleaning

Nitrogen trifluoride is mainly used as a chamber-cleaning gas in semiconductor, display panel and thin-film manufacturing.

In a plasma cleaning system, NF₃ provides reactive fluorine species that help remove deposits from:

  • CVD chamber walls

  • PECVD equipment

  • Showerheads

  • Electrodes

  • Process shields

  • Internal chamber components

  • Exhaust pathways

NF₃ is widely used for cleaning CVD reactors in semiconductor and display manufacturing.

YIGAS supplies:

  • 99.99% NF₃

  • 99.996% NF₃

  • 43L DOT cylinders with approximately 20 kg net filling weight

  • 47L cylinders with approximately 22 kg net filling weight

  • CGA640 valve connection

Customers should select the purity grade according to CF₄, nitrogen, oxygen, moisture, HF and other impurity limits.

CF₄ and NF₃ are not automatically interchangeable. The correct product depends on the process tool, material being removed, plasma system, cleaning recipe and environmental control requirements.

The equipment manufacturer and process engineering team should determine the approved gas and operating conditions.

Gas Purity and Quality Control

Small amounts of moisture, oxygen, hydrocarbons, particles or other contaminants can affect semiconductor processes.

When selecting a semiconductor gas supplier, buyers should review:

  • Minimum gas purity

  • Individual impurity limits

  • Testing method

  • Batch consistency

  • Cylinder cleanliness

  • Valve compatibility

  • Filling environment

  • Certificate of Analysis

  • Batch and cylinder traceability

  • Product change notification

YIGAS can provide product specifications and available quality documents for customer review.

Customers with an approved internal gas standard should submit the complete specification before ordering. The technical team can compare it with the available product grade and confirm whether additional requirements need to be evaluated.

Flexible Gas Packaging and Supply

Cylinder / Bulk / On-site Purity Gas Supply

Different semiconductor gases require different packaging and delivery methods.

Nitrogen and Argon

Depending on consumption, nitrogen and argon may be supplied through:

  • High-pressure gas cylinders

  • Cylinder bundles

  • Tube trailers

  • Liquid gas tanks

  • ISO tank delivery

  • Scheduled bulk supply

Ammonia, CF₄ and NF₃

Electronic specialty gases are generally supplied in dedicated cylinders or larger approved gas containers according to the product and customer requirement.

Available supply arrangements may include:

  • Individual qualification cylinders

  • Multi-cylinder shipments

  • Scheduled monthly deliveries

  • Annual supply agreements

  • Customer-specific labels

  • Cylinder traceability

  • Empty-cylinder return planning

Final packaging must be confirmed according to gas properties, product purity, destination regulations and customer equipment.

Safety and Environmental Considerations

Each semiconductor gas has different safety requirements.

  • Nitrogen and argon can displace oxygen in enclosed spaces.

  • Ammonia is toxic and corrosive.

  • CF₄ is a compressed gas and requires controlled storage and exhaust management.

  • NF₃ is an oxidizing gas and requires compatible delivery equipment and suitable abatement.

CF₄ and NF₃ are fluorinated greenhouse gases. Semiconductor facilities should manage consumption, leaks and process exhaust through suitable operating controls and abatement systems.

All gases must be stored and used according to the current Safety Data Sheet, local regulations and facility operating procedures.
